Funding for Families in Need

I can see how a request like this could easily get sticky. I don't really think the PTO should be helping on such an individual basis... if there was an established fund for all needy families, I would support that; but, only providing assitance to one family is questionable to me.

Our superintendent has asked us to help pay for school fees, busing, supply kits, and clothing for a family in need. In the past we have subsidized field trips, food days, or small requests. At the risk of sounding heartless, I can see this opening a real can of worms. This is a new frontier for us and I'm wondering how other schools have dealt with requests like this.
Thanks for any input.
