This year we were asked to match some grant funds to pay for a teacher's aide for our after school tutering. The aide already works at the school during the day, so her benefits are covered. Plus the tutering is only 2 hrs. a day 3 days a week and has helped so many kids pass or increase their grades and FCAT scores.

Seems to me as a private school the PTO/PTA should not be asked to do that, you already pay for your child to attend the school. I thought your tuition paid the teachers salaries amongst other things. My youngest son goes to a MDO that's what his tuition covers, granted they do a fundraiser a month it seems. Maybe suggest to your principal to do more fundraising. I just find that crazy. I'm pretty my board would give our principal one of "those looks" if asked to pay teacher's salaries.

YES! But that sounds more like a private school issue. At our private school, we have been asked by the principal to "supplement" a salary when the school's budget would not allow for something.

At my sister's children's elementary, Highland Park Independent School District, in Dallas, TX (a $$$$ school distric), her PTA group ended up paying the salary of a Spanish teacher because the PTA wanted Spanish taught so badly and it was not in their budget. So it is not unheard of in a public school.

I still DON'T LIKE IT but I did agree to a $5,000 supplement this year because it was one of the greatest needs of our school.

This year our group is paying for the library/media assistant, the nurse's aide, and part of the janitor's salary. We had major budget cuts from our district last year and these people would have been let go if we hadn't stepped in. We have actually paid for the media aide for years. We give the money to the school to put in their account with the district to pay the salaries

We don't like to pay for salaries - we would rather pay for things like suppleis and programs. However, rather than let the budget cuts effect the kids we stepped in. This year the principal is not asking us to pay for salaries - only for supplies.
