This has been in the works fro a few years now but what is going on (in a nut shell) our charter school is asking to become a charter school through the state instead of our school district.
yeah, A charter school is a school that is formed by parents and educators with the mission of offering a better education. We are a Core Knowledge school meaning this is our soul curriculum. To become a charter school there is tons of paperwork and planning and this is all normally done with the school district, whom has worked with us in the past and very excited about our school but never really welcomed the idea of the school.
In the past seven/eight years has been a roller coaster relationship with the district. The biggest issue is the district is allowed to "take" 5% of our income from the state to cover admin costs and the school can ask how the money has been spent. The district is refusing to report on the expenditures and after the school's last audit, numbers are just not adding up. I forgot to mention that our money was... was held by the district (this includes PTO funds). With our CFO the school now does our own banking/finacing as well as the PTO but the school is still missing $500,000+ in funds.
Monday night, the PTO with the School Board are hosting a special meeting which will mainly be a Q&A session for the parents and staff. How many cookies should I order? No, I'm kidding! I guess more than anything I am so nervous and really hate facing some of these parents that come in with the craziest questions. I should mention the attorney representing the school that works with the State Charter School (commision I think) will also be there. He was at the December meeting and very informative, we agreed it would be great to offer this to all our members and he agreed to this special meeting.
I have cookies, coffee, juice and a babysitter all set, working on a sound system....now if I could just settle my nerves!
It'a great step in the positive direction, I just hope everyone else sees that!
