I know how this feels. I worked for a clinic that was started by 5 women and when they started leaving to start other charitable works, it was sad and you could feel things change as well as worrying that the momentum would be lost.
The irony of commitment is that it’s deeply liberating-in work, in play, in love. The act frees you from the tyranny of your internal critic, from the fear that likes to dress itself up and parade around as rational hesitation. To commit is to remove your head as the barrier to your life. --Anne Morris
Problem solved unfortunatly. He sent an e-mail to the board resigning today. The members of the board are great people but it hurts to loose One of only 2 persons that has been involved with the PTO since the formation stages.
Find a nice way to say that everyone, including yourself, is concerned that he has not tended to this very important part of the VP's duties and ask if there is something that the group needs to know about why this is being neglected. Most likely, you should then suggest he take a less demanding role than his current position requires. This is one of the hardest things about working with people that want to help, especially when you need help, you don't want to turn them down but it is necessary to keep things running smoothly to follow your own rules and utilize your volunteers to their best capacity.

O.k. our PTO is a little difrent than most if not all of yours. I am the President of the first known totaly virtual PTO that suports a 8 state wide virtual school (and growing).
We had our first election this past September and have it set up where there are 2 reps for each state and 1 President elected in the election. After the election the Board then apoints one of its own as the Vice Prez.
We spent 9 monts prior to this school year with a "formation committee" I led that committee and ran unaposed as President one of the members of the formation committee got elected as a state rep then the board apointed him Vice President.
We hold our board meetings via phone and have them every 2-4 weeks depending on busniess. Our VP has yet to attend 1 meeting (has missed a total of 5 meetings to date took office October 1)
He has provided no explaination for not attending and members of the board are sugesting that we should remove him as VP if not from the board entirely.
He is a good person and has been valuable to me in day to day operations when needed and I don't want to loose him as a comrad and a friend but by holding off the board members calling for his head I am in some ways breaking our by laws.
I already know the answer but what do you guys think?
