Our PTO President and Treasurer are Married...

20 years 1 week ago #100676 by JHB
That was our situation when I first got really active in the PTO - a wonderful couple who did lots for the school/PTO. In fact the husband practically lived up at the school helping with all kinds of projects. I never had a problem with them personally, but just didn't think the situation felt right.

A year later, financial problems, and $1300+ embezzled...we were turned upside down dealing with the fallout. Needless to say - our bylaws now prohibit two members of the same household from being elected officers simultaneously.

Even if the two people are totally beyond reproach - it just doesn't look right and creates a weakness in your checks and balances. If I were one of the two - I'd WANT additional controls just to protect myself.

Our elementary PTO is new and our Pres and Treasurer are married. Any suggestion I have made (I am the secretary) regarding handling of our funds in a professional and legal manner puts them on the defensive. I personally don't think they should ever handle the money only between the two (they both are signers) and should include other board members or a committee to oversee funds, even if simply to protect them from rumors and speculation.

To make matters more difficult the pres seems to be threatened by other competent board members and tends to take over even during board meetings (taking over most of the input, claiming other peoples ideas are her own and even trying to "beat them to it.") I have been as diplomatic and assertive as I can be but considering their marriage it feels like I am up against a team. Neither one would address any issues with the other even if it is necessary.

Any suggestions? I am having a miserable time when I expected to feel positive about improving my sons school community.
