I would love a copy of your volunteer sheet as well if you don't mind sharing. I will be our president next year and the last thing I want to do is "reinvent the wheel". My address is This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Hi, I am a new president this year also. In the past we were lucky to have 4 board members, the principal and 2 parents. My goal this year is recruiting, I started a monthly newsletter, an e-mail address, working on a web site, and just talking to every parent I run into. We cancelled our Fall Festival, which I reported in the first newsletter, and added that it was due to "lack of volunteer involvement", because lots of people always come but nobody wants to help. It is paying off, last year we got 8 volunteer slips back for the Halloween Party, this year we have gotten 44. I was so excited. Anyway, I need a model volunteer sheet for the whole year so I am not sending one out before every event, could you possibly e-mail me yours, as a guide. Much appreciated.

I love to share good ideas so here goes . . .

As a new president I was determined NOT to do absolutely everything myself this year. My biggest goal was to work on delegating and being firm but likeable in my approach to getting 'help'.

I worked during the summer to come up with 'committee description forms' for each item that I wanted help with.

Each form gives a description, expected chairperson duties, volunteer duties, time/date (if I had one) and a simple budget. It also included some basic info on press releases and how to advertise. The last thing I included was any flyers, advertisements or notes from the previous years to use an example.

I made copies of each committee and had them out at the first meeting for anyone interested.

I can't belive the difference it made! I had 10 committees that needed chairpeople, 3 filled that evening and 2 more have since called and volunteered!

I was overjoyed! I did make a firm announcement that if we didn't find folks to head committees this year things would be cancelled. I wasn't rude but got my point across. I hope that with some more advertisement of my plight I will be able to get more people involved over the next few meetings.

I had a few parents tell me it made a huge difference having it written out so they could take it home and see if they could help in some way by knowing all that was expected of them.
