i have been the label coordinator for hte last 2 years at our K-5 school of 425 students. CLass parties work great and dont take up much time. WE do like a popsicle party or popcorn and juice to have during their free time. Your principal needs to be on your side, what a crock they can be sometimes.
We did individual prizes for the student from each classroom that donated the most labels/box tops. I got TONS of donations, I am in KC so the Royals gave me 4 huge gym bags full of hats, and balls and bats and pics and you name it we got it. I got Soccer tickets doanted and ZOo tickets donated and movie tix, made it a family event. As bad as this seems, I even gave each child a list of what was an eligible item and told them ot look for them at grocery stores.
One thing that may hook your parents is the child that donates the most labels/box tops, can throw a pie in the principals face.
Our PTO just approved the Box Tops as a fundraiser and honestly it's not the kids I'm concerned about because whenever you put out or advertise a prize it will gear them up...my question is how do you hook the parents?! What is the earning potention for this and what do some of you tell them is the money going to? We have the letter from the website but I'm trying to think beyond sending paper home. Anyway I know I can count on you all!!
we are running a summer boxtop contest - over the summmer students are to collect as many boxtops as they can (enlist grandparents, aunts, uncles, friends, etc..) and return them in september in a sealed envelope with students name/teacher/grade on it. at end of september all envelopes will be counted and a prize awarded - we have chosen a school mascot beanie and school store gift certificate for $10. last year the top winner had over 1000!
I'm the Box Top Coordinator at our school. We have about 145 kids enrolled. The Box Tops were really slow to come in, so I set up a contest. Since then, the Box Tops have been pouring in! We average about 500 per month. For a school our size, I think that is wonderful!
The kids and parents are excited about turning them in. It has really been a blessing to our school. What we are doing is having the kids write their name/grade on the back of each box top. Each box top is an entry in our monthly prize drawing. I was able to purchase some super prizes from Target's after Xmas sales (Boomer and Tekno Kittys that are regularly about $50-$60 each. I got them for around $5-$6 each.) Each month we offer about 4 or 5 prizes and the winner gets to take his/her pick. The second month we drew 2 kids names and they got to take their pick. This month will be our last contest for the school year and we have about 20+ prizes set up and tons of "small" things like bubble gum, etc. We want to make it so that everyone gets something.
I sent home a flyer today with a certificate for a bonus entry in the drawing so that everyone has a chance to win one of the larger prizes. I'm hoping that will get everyone involved. So far, the contest is going wonderfully.
I'm planning on doing a contest for when we return to school in the fall. Something like the class who returns the most Box Tops gets a party or something like that.

I'M SORRY TO HEAR HOW YOUR "PRINCIPLE" FEELS ABOUT PROMOTION OF POSITIVE INTERACTION BETWEEN THE CHILDREN, SCHOOL,& YOUR PARENTS? I'VE DONE BOXTOPS, GROCERY RECEIPTS, CAMPBELL'S LABEL'S, FOR THE LAST 3 YEARS. I HAVE A COUPLE OF SUGGESTIONS, YOU MAY OR MAY NOT CHOOSE TO TRY? 1. VOTE OUT YOUR PRESENT ADMINISTRATOR OUT! MY PTO GROUP AND I DON'T BELIEVE THEY WHERE EVER A CHILD?HA HA JUST KIDDING...
2.MAY BE SLIGHTLY EASIER THAN SUGG...#1. , THIS YEAR WE REWARDED EVERY SINGLE CHILD IN THE SCHOOL WHO BROUGHT EVEN ONLY 1 OF THE LABELS, ETC...THAT'S EVERYONE! A POPSICLE ON US AND SOME ENTERTAINMENT TO WATCH WHILE YOUR ENJOYING YOUR BREAK FROM EVERYDAY HO-HUM...PTO HELPED, TEACHERS GOT A SMALL BREAK ,IT'S ALL DONE ON ONE SCHEDULED DAY ,1 TO 1 AND A HALF HOURS TOPS AND BELIEVE IT OR NOT, LABELS ARE FLOWING IN MORE THAN EVER. EVEN ADM. CAN HANDLE THAT, I HOPE! YOU'D BE SURPRISED WHAT THE CHILDREN REMEMBER...[HIS/HER NAME NOT BEING CALLED IN A DRAWING, OR HE/SHE BEING LET OUT OF CLASS TO ENJOY A SWEET TREAT W/ ALL THEIR FRIENDS, AND WATCH A MAGICIAN???
HOPE THIS HELPS IN SOME WAY!
I had been operating a school store at the elementary school the last few years. We only accept boxtops - no cash- for pencils, erasers, sharpeners, etc. It's been a great success. We have it once a month before school starts. We usually end up with about 500 to 750 boxtops in a 45-minute span. The kids love "shopping" and it's fun to watch them using their math skills.
This year I had to move up to middle school which is quite different. We still run a store, but we also accept cash, once a week. The middle schoolers don't think its cool to bring in boxtops; however, I note that I have about 100 boxtops come in a week plus about $10 to $15 in cash.
