Creative Auction Items

Our auction night went from $30,000 to over $100,000 by inviting table sponsors and business owners a chance to market and network at the event. Our attendance shot up from 300-450 to a projected 800+ this year... don't be afraid to sell tables and use that tax-write off option.

Our elementary school's auction has items that each class donates. For the older kids, the teachers select themes and request that each child brings in either an item to match that theme or money, even $2 or $3. Then the teacher would purchase items with the money. Themed baskets have included movie night, coffee-related, Italian food, summer fun, etc. Some classes have donated only money and then the teacher either makes a "money tree" or purchases lottery tickets.

For the younger classes, personlized items are more popular. For example, one year the kindergarten class got a white apron. They used different color paints, and a teacher (or class mom) helped each child put their handprint on the apron. The adult then wrote the child's name under the handprint. Believe it or not, each year the aprons went for over $500.

Another nice item was a child's bookcase, painted white. The teacher/class mom had each child put a thumbprint on it with different colored paint. Then the mom/teacher wrote their name under it. When the paint was dry, the adult turned each thumbprint into a different animal, for example, a butterfly, elephant, etc. It was adorable and went for a few $100.

My all time favorite was a collection of drawings by a 3rd grade class. One of the moms went into the classroom and had each child draw what they wanted to be when they grew up on a piece of paper about 2"x2" or 3"x3" and write their name on it as well. She then took each picture and had it matted and framed, with a beautiful poem in the middle from a card or something (it wasn't just typed, it was on cardstock and very pretty) about children growing up. It was just beautiful. I wanted it myself, but since I didn't have a child in that class, I didn't bid on it so the parents could have it.

Hope these ideas help someone.

we just received a tour of a local TV studio for up to 30 people. Since our 3rd and 4th grade class combine has 20 kids.. All the parents are thinking about bidding on this for one of the actual field trips for the school...The bids will help pay for the transportation and lunch afterwards for the children.

I've chaired several auctions. The most successful was Live/Silent & Raffle.

Smaller inexpensive items (childrens books) and items not sold from previous year (golf bag) were displayed with a decorated shoe box near it. Raffle tickets were sold for $1.00 each. Participants dropped their ticket into a box of the item that interested them. Tickets are drawn from the box through out the auction.

Medium midpriced items were put into a silent auction - if an item is getting alot of bids we move it into the live auction!

Most of the money raised comes from the live auction! We had a parent auctioneer who really kept it lively. Items price over $100 were in the live auction. Teachers donate special trips or events that include the winning student and friends. Trips to the bookstore to purchase a book with lunch, trip to ice cream parlor, pizza party, etc. We more than tripled the amount given by putting teacher items in the live auction. Every student wanted to be Principal for the day! Classrooms also create themed baskets - best one was a Lawn & Garden-items displayed in a wheel barrel.

Good luck on you events!

We're planning to auction it off as one item... but we expect (and are encouraging) parents to get together to bid on it. The winning bidder gets to invite the children of their choice. Im thinking this would be a great birthday party for my 7 year old!!!

Do you auction it off as one item that one person buys? How does it work when it's for 10 children? Just curious. Great idea.
