Southviewmom, the ones I have been to have an auctioneer. Since your baskets are large maybe you could have two smaller baskets with the same theme and do a little better. $4,000 sounds pretty good to me though.
A few years ago the elementary across the county offered a pizza party and a parent paid about $200.00 just so his child would get that pizza party. I guess he didn't realize a class pizza party cost about $30. LOL!
The auctions around here are held at night and open to the community.
I didn't see these items (perhaps I over looked):
Fishing Basket- these are kinda popular around here because we two rivers, a lake, and many ponds in our county.
College Sport Basket- Don't forget to support your favorite team.

How do you make so much money? We have about 100 huge theme baskets and we only make maybe $4000 last spring. Are you just selling it like raffle tickets and placing them in bags next to the baskets? We have tried doing it with the bid sheets and last year we did it with boxes and they had to put in slips of paper with their highest bid, so no one knew how much each other was bidding. We had little success with donations from companies last year, so many people were asking them for things is what we were told. Great job on your auction!
Hallelujah! We struggle every year to come up with a basket theme, and we only need ONE! So thanks a million to everyone who posted ideas....maybe we can actually settle on one and get it done before the week it's due?? OH- we do it for the Scholarship foundation. Each school's PTO donates a gift basket and they are raffled off at a dinner/dance in February, all proceeds going to the scholarship foundation. I think last year they gave away 15 scholarships. It's fun, but we always wait till the last minute!
Those are some AWESOME ideas.. but, one comment to the original poster.. I think that today, it is more pleasant sounding to call it a Theme Basket Auction, or something similar.. A Chinese Auction is a very outdated term, and you may inadvertently offend some of your families!!
