Our annual festival and auction is in November. By the time we request items from businesses, they tell us they have already donated all of their allowance for the year. I have contacted a few companies since it is the beginning of the year and they told me to contact them again closer to the event date. Does anyone have any idea how to overcome this huge obstacle?

Rather than start from scratch, contact your local Chamber of Commerce. they will provide you with a list of all the businesses in your area, plus contact information.
I think most schools that hold auctions still solicit donations from business. In part because it has been successful in the past and most groups have a hard time with change. My own school is no different. But our auction became so much more successful when we began to look at other sources. We still go thru the COC list, but we look at it more as a supplement rather than the focus.
