my response is to the PTA vs. PTO article dated august/september 2000 regarding Patty Yoxall's comment"...Then go form a Pto and have a nice life". Patty, whether or not you are a PTO or a PTA all our goals are the same! We all are looking out for the best for our children! Your comment was rude!

OUR PTO I COVERED UNDER OUR SCHOOLS UMBRELLA POLICY FOR ALL EVENTS. AS LONG AS YOU HAVE A GOOD WORKING RELATIONSHIP WITH THEM THIS SHOULD NOT BE A PROBLEM. YOU CAN GO THROUGH THE PRINCIPAL BUT YOU WILL END UP WITH THE DISTRICT MANAGER TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTIONS. A REQUEST CAN BE MADE TO THE SCHOOL BOARD IF NO ONE ELSE CAN MAKE A DECISION, JUST HAVE YOUR FACTS READY.

In some areas the local school districts do not cover the PTO's or PTA's activities under their insurance. You should check with your local school board to verify this information.

Just a clarification-

In most states, PTA membership does get you access to PTA group insurance rates. But in most states, dues do not include that insurance, just access to it.

Dues to unsurance? What do you mean, our PTO does not charge dues and does not pay dues. In addition, we do not have insurance, don't see the need for it. We are in the school and required to have school personnel at the school and the city/school is insured.

One thing you left out is the fact that your dues go towards insurance so you don't have to purchase your own.....I feel PTA is the way to go....more support....more ideas.....
