Your school board is the group that wrote up the policy guidelines, based upon a recent federal law. every shcools policy is DIFFERENT in how they interepreted the law and in how the rules and regs are set up for the school AND for the parent organization.
your best bet for clarifications is to go to your BOE.
theirmeetings are public. they typically allow questions and comments from the public at their meeitings, before they vote in any new policy, but sounds like you missed that opportunity. so now you need to visit them at the next board meeting and submit your questions agenda ahead of time.
if your PTO is independent and under ZERO rule of the school or district, you might find loopholes and neednt even bother discussing the matter with the BOE. just a hunch, might not work but who knows - get legal advice, maybe a pto member can give you some free counsel on how to proceed.
every shool has a few lawyer parents among the PTO.
PART RANT.... AND A QUESTION FOR ALL OF YOU!
I recieved an email from a PTO board member with an attachment of the new "wellness policy" in place for our school district. It has a basic outline of..."only nutrictious foods will be offered during and after school." There will not even be vending machines.. we can no longer offer soda at concessions... we can no longer sell cotton candy for any event with our $2,000.00 cotton candy machine! They are even questioning our PTO ice cream social. It's not right! I understand we want to encourage healthy eating habits, but don't we all indulge sometimes?
My dilema.. they are saying we can not do our anual "Trick or Treat Tailgate" in the high school parking lot. This is A BIG FUNDRAISER for our PTO. How do we get around this policy.. should we fight it for the sake of fund raising and FUN for kids?
