Thanks.... I'm going for it. There are several parents I've talked to who would join me at a school board mtg. Also, has anyone ever written a petition. Is it 25 signatures?... I'll have to look that one up.

No, I think you should fight it for the sake of sanity. Good God -- I can 100% guarantee that ice cream socials are not the cause of our children's (and our own, too) widening beltlines.
aOK is right that your school board is interpreting a federal guideline. Thing is, though, your school board has gone way, way further than the federal guideline even suggests, never mind requires.
Yes, I think you guys should advocate for common sense changes to these requirements. I think roughky 98.99% of your community would agree that banning ice cream socials is ridiculous. Aim for a change that brings sanity and balance back to your district.
Before you panic, get a copy of your "Wellness Policy". Our new district policy states that if we are passing out food, free or otherwise and we are at least 1/2 hour before the school day begins or at least 1/2 hour after school ends we are ok with cotton candy, pizza, etc. We are also OK if we are passing this out to the entire school at any point during the school day.
This policy was meant to establish guidelines for school lunch programs and those teachers who keep a jar of candy on their desk and buy pizza for their class as a bribe.
Don't go selling your cotton candy machine on e-bay just yet!

No, unfortunately, this Wellness plan was written up by the school board, not by our PTO. We have to seek any approval through the school board (and they are being extreme in their interperatation.)
In response to the cotton candy machine...
It is a fully encased machine with lights and all the works. It was recently donated by a grocery store. It was bound to be a money raiser for all of our events this year.
Hey, by the way, we'd love to find a loop hole, but there is a slight conflict of interest... the principal of our school is married to a prominant member of the school board... that's small town politics for ya'!
