I'D GET THE MEDIA INVOLVED - IT IS A WASTE OF TAXPAYER'S $$ FOR THEM TO DO SUCH A THING. I AGREE - LET YOU VOICES BE HEARD!! YOU HAVE EVERY RIGHT TO BE UPSET - I WOULD BE OUTRAGED!!!!!!
Serendipity has some great advise, as well as others. You ( and othere parents)need to be heard. Have they considered the cost of just not what the PTO has done, but other issues as well? I'm thinking of the school's letter head, envelopes, all pubic information that's printed? Media contact info (I know from experience that a name change whether it be from public or private businesses it causes a nightmare)
Get the community involved and at least nothing else let your voices be heard!
It happens quite a bit. It's too bad that trying to honor someone creates such an administrative nightmare for so many. Try to stay involved with the transition, as much you can. As head of the group that is raising money to support the school, your perspective is vital to the process. Ask for time to ease into it.
Stay positive and set the tone others will follow your lead. Try to capitalize on it by having commemorative shirts made, hold a farewell party, choose a new mascot, etc. Try to get the students involved somehow to try to minimize the "identity crisis" feeling they might be having.
A lot of work ahead of you and it will cost $$ it will all work out in the end - hang in there!
Oh, forgot to mention - we have an interim superintendent right now, district hopes to have new one in place by middle of next month. Probably wouldn't have happened, otherwise. Very political situation I think.
My first question is how could they do this with out any notice to anyone? Usually something of that nature would be discussed for some time before a vote and concerned parties would be allowed to speak out in favor or against the change.
Obviously the damage is done, but I would definately attend their next meeting and speak out about it regardless. I would let them know the financial impact this decision will have on you. I would certainly mention your new school sign and let them know that your organization will not be spending any money to change that sign. I would also not invest any money on any new spirit shop items until you sell out of what you have. It really is an outrage that they did this without consulting anyone to find out what impact this would have on others. I would also speak with the superintendent.
Most likely nothing will change, but I would still want to be heard and I would make it abundantly clear that you will not loose a penny over the name change.
