Our school colors were recently changed, last year I believe. Our principal and I don't know who else, changed our school colors. I think this is the 3rd time in 53 years that our school colors have been changed. They were previously teal and a reddish orange. Now they are red and gray. I think the red and gray/black are much more in with the 21st century! We're hoping to go "Select School Attire" (school uniforms) in 2006-2007 school year and I think our new school colors will look sharp. Our mascot was also tweaked to look more scholarly. I didn't hear much objection (a few who object to anything major that the principal does). I think they all think the new colors are much more appealing. Our PTA doesn't order the school shirts. The school actually does and sells them. This next school year though, we're incharge of spirit Fridays, etc.
I say, go with what the "school" wants. Especially if the students want the blue, it's all for them anyway!
To resolve the issue regarding the clothing, since both sets of colors include Gold, why not get everything in Color Gold and imprint in White or Black?
You could also do Tie-Dyed Shirts and Flannel Pants and imprint the school name & logo in White.
That may work for some schools to have a PTO shirt as well as school shirt like ScottMom#1's. But at our elementary school, we defnitely need to have just one.
The kids wear their "school shirt" (which is sold by the PTO) for spirit days and often on field trips. Having two would be confusing for us and the parents would balk at the expense.
Our school has a mascot and ugly colors that were put in place over 10 years ago. 2 years ago the PTO just made shirt with a different mascot on them and no one really cared for them. Staff member asked if we could do something more current for our shirts so this year we held a contest and then had the student body vote on their favorite design out of those submitted. We used this to make shirts and other spirit items for our group but the school still continues to use the original mascot and colors for their letterhead and items they sell(which are not items that we would sell). No one has a problem with this because what the school uses look professional and boring where as what we use is fun for kids and staff and when it is out of style, can be changed without making changes of letterhead, etc. which can be expensive. Basically, I'm saying your prinicpal wants it one way and the principal runs the school not the PTO, so come to an agreement about what to do and what each group will use their mascot and colors for so families don't get confused.

Usually the school colors are tied into the school mascot and those are decisions made by the school. I think it rather odd that the PTO voted to change them. I'm certain that is outside their scope of authority. Go with what the staff and administration says...
I don't think it is the PTO's place to change the school colors. If the principal says blue and the kids you asked said blue and the staff says blue then I think that is all you need to know.
