Thanks for all of your input. I've let it go, and we've been able to reschedule at least half of the meeting. The only person it seemed to bother was me! Come on Spring!
I'm a Iowa born gal and now live in Denver, snow is a hobby.
You would feel much worse if you knew something terrible happened to someone on the way there or home. A couple years ago we had a gal from Florida on the board, we took turns picking her up and taking her to meetings as she refused to drive in the snow. Mother Nature can be a great gal but she has the worse sense of timing!lol
Anything urgent would have been discussed via e-mail or on the phone or the next morning at school in an Board meeting.
You are fine and did the right thing. I wish our school would have cancelled meetings I still can't beleive I made it home from!
I would not let this bother you. There will always be What if? You cancelled out of concern for the Parents and Children. I live in Central New York and We have snow. (7 feet in acouple of days) We have now cancelled our Parents vs. Teachers volleyball game acouple of times. We just plan another day and promote that it was cancelled due to weather. You can work in the weather by saying ... Feeling Cabin Fever, Join other Parents at what the event is.
Don't take it to heart! Remember why you are involved... The Children!
What's done is done, right? Our policy is if the building is closed due to weather then our event is cancelled, otherwise it happens. But, our district is fairly conservative and because of poorly maintained back roads, cancels at the drop of a hat. And they don't close just the most rural school, they close them all!
In the winter months we try to have a snow date for every pta meeting or event and to let them know the snow date. Better yet, don't plan on big events in Jan or Feb.. Now everyone repeat after me......no more snow, spring is coming....no more snow, spring is coming.....no more snow, spring is coming
I'm confused--who cancelled the night? Was it a PTA thing where all PTAs were supposed to participate, or was it something your group had planned on its own? I'm just trying to understand if it was your decision to cancel, or if someone else called on you to do it. Either way, if the weather was supposed to get bad, what else could you do? If you'd had it, and the weather got horrific and you'd gathered all these people together only to have them drive home in it, you'd really feel badly! And like you said, in the greater scheme of things it's just a drop in the bucket--don't sweat it. And if you reschedule with lots of promotion, I don't see why it couldn't be just as successful! Here is my thoughts: I'm in Indiana so I know all about that horrible snow. We may have a day where school is not cancelled or delayed but once evening hits and the temp drops and it snows its just not a safe thing to be out in...temps, black ice, white outs...you know all the possiblities
You let NOONE down by agreeing to cancel the meeting due to weather conditions. You actually did something good in my opinion. I know the headache of replanning a meeting...I am doing our carnival and have had to reschedule 3 meetins so far due to weather. Its a huge headache but I really think you shouldn't feel guilty or the weight of rescheduling weigh you down. Atleast you were concerned about the parents safety and I can tell you for a fact a lot of people could care less anymore.
You did a good job, please don't feel bad. lol hey if you ever move to Indiana and are in my school area I'd love to have someone like you working with me.
Be proud of yourself for your concern
