Brand New Prez & Leaving Already

22 years 5 months ago #68974 by JHB
As another Texas (Austin), let me welcome you in advance to the Lone Star State. It's a wonderful place to live, with enormous geographic and cultural diversity.

I'm sure your own Parent Organization has benefitted greatly from your participation and enthusiasm. So even though you're leaving earlier than planned, you've already left your mark to some degree.

Your children's next school will be lucky to have you!

I didn't mean to make you cry!!!! ;) I wouldn't recind any comments made though, as a retail widow (if the store is open 9-9 someone has to work!) I have the PTO and my faith to keep me grounded. When we moved here the first thing I did was found a church then called the school!

You'll find that inner strength we all seem to find when we need it most and be fine. How I'm still trying to understand myself but know if we get the call I need to be able to show the kids we can do this and survive. ;)

Have told the board, we're trying to convene the 7 of us ASAP to work on the transition team - the principal took it the hardest of all, I think, which I found to be quite a compliment. I cried with each of them on the phone - know I will cry again when we get together. They have each told me I can stay as long as I want, which is helpful as I need something positive to focus my energy on right now - when I have energy, that is. I guess I'll have to rescind my statement to AES in another post somewhere on this forum that PTO is not a religion - huh?????? Thanks to all for your kind words and suggestions. I'll stay around here until I can't anymore for this school, then will find my feet firmly planted on the ground elsewhere and I'm sure will find my place there as well.

Thanks, mykidsmom! You've helped and made me cry all at once. By the way - I moved 9 times before graduating high school and survived. Ironically - as the name implies, I move people - so I can't complain [too much]. (NOT A COMMERCIAL - TIM!) I sell moving services to corporations that transfer employees. That said - the timing just stunk!!!!

We did tell the kids late in the week. To our faces it's all a bed of roses, but from my friends (of course the parents of their friends) we are hearing what they are REALLY feeling - especially my 9-year-old daughter.

One of the exec members (co-VP)was on vacation last week, I'm going to call her Monday morning and try to get together with both VP's early in the week. Treasurer already knows, she's one of my best friends and I needed to cry on SOMEONE's shoulder. Will let you know how that goes and for sure will be gettting involved as soon as I've unpacked in the new locale!

Thanks again for the encouragement.

I hate the word tranfer....no really! My daughter has been in six different schools and the poor kid has moved so many times she refuses to learn her address!

I would start with the Principal as you will need their support the most. Your officer team as a whole needs to know ASAP. When I learned I was having the baby this past year, I made sure my officers knew before I told anyone else in school as to not only keep them from the surprised deer headlight look but to give them a heads up! In my head, I would tell all the officers because you never know- maybe someonelse besides the VP will want to take a chance and step up to the plate! It's how my friend in college became Secretary of DECA- the first gal dropped out and Becky asked if she could give it a try! She was perfect! Just a thought...
You really need to tell your kids. This year alone, my husband has been asked to consider three different moves. I was honest with my oldest and told her about the job offers but also let her know not to worry as nothing is packed and Dad is waiting to hear back. I didn't want to move...even to the job that would have taken us only 100 miles from my parents instead of the 600 we are now! The whole idea of new school, new people to met, new streets to remember, new, new, new..... we have heard back on two (no) but now there is another offer in the air. (UGH) The advantage you have over me is you know for sure, and you do have the summer to "groom" someone that is interested as nothing is worse than the Prez that disappers into the night and leaves NOTHING behind to work with!

I wish you the best and a safe move. Let us know how things go and don't forget about us!

what is it exactly that your vice presidents do? in our bylaws it states that they take over in the event there is no president. we had just your situation last year and didn't have a new president elected until january. if they are co vice presidents, suggest maybe they could be co-presidents. sounds like you have gone a long way toward organizing and could leave them with a good foundation. if i was in their shoes, i would rather know sooner than later. if they still won't take over than you could hold a special election before you leave in the fall.
good luck!
