One other thing...in Excel you'd have a choice of 3 levels of sort. So like in your case, you could tell it you wanted to sort by Volunteer Position, then by Last name, then by Firstname. It would be all in one step.
With this, you backwords. To achieve that same thing, sort by first name. Then sort by last name. Then sort by Volunteer Position. It should keep previously sorted chunks together.
Thank you, I tried it and now all the people who indicated they would be interested in volunteering on their PTA Membership form are listed according to their interests, and our school volunteer coordinator can access the spreadsheet as well. This is really cool, thank you so much!

Normally with spreadsheets, you want to be careful on sorting that you don't sort just one column (like "first name") and get it out of sync with the other items on that row.
However it appears in Google Spreadsheet, that it simplifies things and sets up the sort so it's the entire row or nothing. That means less possible mistakes. (And, notice, under the Edit tab, there are undo and redo buttons if you need them.)
I may not be able to get the columns exactly lined up, but here's an example for sorting.
Row one is frozen with your titles. If you want to sort by Firstname, just put your cursor anywhere in Column A, click on the Sort tab, then the button A-Z or Z-A depending on ascending or descending. If you'd rather sort by Sequence, click on Column C, the Sort, the A-Z or Z-A button.
You do need to give it a second to refresh as it's not on your computer but on the Google server.
Cool! Made my first spreadsheet ever, something I've been wanting to learn for a long time! I still haven't figured out how to get it to alphabetize additional entries, but hey, I'm learning! Thanks very much for the site!

Even beyond sharing among volunteers, there have been times I'd like access to a particualr document/spreadsheet from anywhere - even if I was the only one using it.
Holy smokes! I didn't even think about that. I do all my PTO stuff on our school's network, available only through school computers. And I don't have Word at home so I can put stuff on google nowanddoitfromhomeohmygodnessiamramblingandIdon'tcare!!!!
AND IT'S FREE!!!!
but Netmeeting (with MS Office) has the same capabilites as this (I like this google prog too) and can be updated in realtime/ via chat/ or application share or just like googledocs
