Any parent that spends their time raising good kids, is a team player.
In fact, the best thihng FOR your school is to have good, hardworking, nice kids, that can be role models and peers for the others.
Bunk to the parents who think if youre not visible your 'not on the team'.

Wow... I am so glad to hear others feel the way I do. I thought I must be crazy or something. I've been very involved in our PTO's for both of my kids schools for 9 years.... 5 of which I was president... the last 3 were in a row. I have enjoyed it tremendously but am feeling like I am burned out and quite honestly... getting too old and too hormonal to deal with other parents. Ha! So I have decided to step out... I will head up one function... our middle school's Powder Football Game, which is a biggie but that will be it. My involvement (my sincere dedication and belief in what we do) has at times over the years caused some friction between my husband and I and that is another reason I feel it time to step down. However... I was surprised at people's response... some were actually indignant that I won't be around to help... almost like they feel it is my responsibility to head things up. One lady in her urging me not to step out said, "you need to be a team player." This is a woman who has over the years helped ot occassionaly and when she did step up to head up a committee or activity I always ended up having to step up at the eleventh hour and finish things up.... Their remarks were very surprising and I'll be honest it ticked me off. I feel that if I never, ever helped out at my child's school again I have certainly done my share. But I am glad to know that others feel the same way... you know it is time to step down but it will be so hard. I keep thinking... what will I do this August? Ha! I am sure there is life outside of the PTO and I am looking forward to living it.

I have decided to resign as president for several reasons, after winter break. It's good to know there is indeed life after PTO

Thanks to all of you who are moving on. You have made your children better for your presence in their lives. There is greatness in the fact that you served!

ptohyeah - I'm with you. I had 5 years too, 2 as pres and already miss it dearly. The new pres. sent out the end-of-year newsletter and it was such a shock to see it. It was the only that's gone out in 5 years that I wasn't the one who sent it - lol

It is a change but, it is really nice to be able to do that whole "pick and choose" option and not have so much responsibility! Good luck on your degree - it's so much hard work and the school is going to be lucky to have you in a teacher capacity

Good luck to you. I totally understand how you feel. Once you become involved in the PTO, it becomes a part of you. I'm not sure if I will be involved in the upcoming school year due to a lot of nonsense going on at our school. Plus I really need to get back to work. I would also love to go back to school so I can become a principal someday. I would love to run a school!
