Officer voting

Well, generally at our Exec parent meetings we vote on anything we spend money on that affects the whole school. What 3 out of 4 of us officers want to do is get something for each of the school secretaries something for Secretaries day because of how much they do for us. We have plenty of money to do it but our President says that no other board has done it. She says we can try to do what we want but she can veto anything we say. She has been behaving like a dictator all year. We voted in next years officers and I have a list of things that I think that they should add to the bylaws. Thank you all so much for your responses.

I'll guess that 99.99% of effective PTO Boards use majority voting. And probably 99.44% of ineffective boards too.

We have 5 board members and the Charter specifically states it takes a vote of at least 3 board members to take action(regardless how many attend an Exec Bd. Meeting).

You will need to get the voting procedures clarified.

To <howdoyouvote>, do you have a controlling document other than By-Laws? It seems to me the membership should vote to amend your oirganizational documents, not just the officers. It doesn't seem right for that small a group to be able to change things on a whim that easily.

our bylaws state a quorum is required for any vote. now, if the officers FOLLOW their own rules is another matter altogtether.
bottom line is, it doesnt matter what the rules are, it matters how ethical and reasoable and concered about doing things right, that the officers are. if you dont trust them to do things in their proper manner, then you need to vote in new officers at next election. but adding something to the bylaws about voting methods would be good, only problem is, its catch 22,,,,,its the officers that have the power to cahnge the bylaws, at least, at our school.

Maybe you should ask your President if he/she views the group as a democracy or a dictatorship! Just kidding-kind of! You seriously should question this voting method. Are the rest of board members comfortable with it?

I don't know of any group who doesn't do a majority vote.

Hey Rocky, watch me pull a rabbit out of my hat.

Voting is not clearly defined in the bylaws when it comes to this type of thing. Only on new officers do we have anything listed on voting. Thanks so much for your thoughts on this.

Do you have bylaws? They should cover voting procedures. Of course majority rules is the proper voting procedure. If that is not the case and the president is allowed to override any vote then why vote at all in the first place?
