these “board “ members have been running things for about 5 years without having elections or having general meeting for their members.
Can a group of us start a new PTO and not hold elections?
In the first part you seem to condemn that no elections were held then you ask if you can do the same thing. ???
Has this group of parents accomplished anything? Did you ask why this group does not want involvement and why there are no minutes to review? Have you expressed your concerns to the principal? I would want his/her support if possible. Maybe your group can attend a meeting together and demand some answers. (there is safety in #'s. LOL)
How does your membership work or is there a membership? Do the By Laws you found discuss removal of an Officer? If not ( and I dont know if these are legal actually w/o a date. )I would think that if a group of concerned parents asked for a vote of removal then they would have to comply. (if nothing else request a meeting with
the 2 groups and the principal and state your concerns)
Is this PTO working on their own or under the schools umbrella? (if they are legal through he IRS the By Laws have to be dated as a copy has to be sent to them)
Have you voiced your desire to become a board member to the current board? Their reaction to that request may be your key as to how to move forward. Also, keep talking with parents who are interested in being involved and make sure that you know when the next meeting is so you can ALL go.
I need some help with my schools PTO, here’s a little background:
The same 4 or 5 parents have been running the show for 5 years. I personal have been asking when and where are their meeting since Oct 2004 and I finally got to attend a “general†meeting on Tuesday during school hours. Then I arrived their was 2 “board†members and that’s it. About 30 minutes later another “board†arrived. WOW!!!! Was I shocked; first the general members were not invited. There was no minute’s from their last meeting or meetings; no minutes were taken at the meeting today, no plans for the 2005-2006 year. And the big shock was that they have around $12,000.00 in the bank!!!
I ask to see the Bylaws and was questioned why and what are those. I did find some Bylaws with no date. Are they legal and binding?
In talking to other parents these “board “ members have been running things for about 5 years without having elections or having general meeting for their members. The books haven’t been audited for a long time and as far as I can see there hasn’t been any contact with the IRS
I guess my question to you is how do I get these people out and start with a new broad members and new bylaws. That is the legal and right way to attack!!!
