I agree, it sounds like a coulple of your Board members are under the wrong impression. More than likely the Presidential nomination has always been someone who had been serving as a board member, so they believed this to be the case.
As always, it's what your Bylaws state. My group's Bylaws indicate that any active member can run for any position and that they just need to inform the President of their desire to run. But since your Bylaws state that only Board members can nominate someone for President, then so be it, that's the way it is. But, I can't see why a member couldn't inform the President or another Board member of their desire to run. Doeesn't mean that they will automatically put that person up, but at least they would be considered.
The Nominations will come from the Executive Board not the Candidates. I agree that only Exec Bd members can nominate the candidates running for President. Probably so they ensure they have a person with PTO experience and someone that knows the ins and outs of the PTO.
If only Exec Board members were allowed to be nomindated, the bylaws would state that Candidates running for President will come from the Executive Board...
I am just finishing up on writing our by laws It states any regular member if nominated has the chance to be elected to any office, even though most of the time it is the current office holders who nominate. I myself was nominated by the principal and a students mother for the V.P. seat but I nominated the name for President and at the time of the meeting was not a current office holder.
I Will Have To Ck Our By-laws But We Were Told That Last Meeting That The Excutive Board Members Would Choose The New Excutive Memebers For The Following Yr....i Disagree With That I Think It Should Be Open To Everyone To Vote For Those Positions Because Aren't We Considered Non Profit, I Think Anyone That Would Like The Oppurtunity To Get Involved Should Be, And The Ones That Are Involved Should Have A Say/vote On Who They Would Want To Do That Position..it Should Not Be Soley Up To The Excutive Board Who Will Be The Incoming President,vp, Ect. That Is Why I Was Wanting To Get A Feel To See How Every One Else Does It..or How It Is Written In Their By-laws
Subject to whatever the organization's bylaws say - officers are generally elected by votes cast by the general membership. So anyone who is a member votes.
Membership should be defined in the bylaws. It might be by person or by family. It might be those who pay dues or might simply include everyone specified, such as parent/guardians of children in the school and teachers and staff.
The elected officers generally include President, Vice President, Treasurer, and Secretary. Some organizations have multiple VP's, some have multiple secretaries, and some have an elected Parliamentarian.
Other positions, such as the Volunteer Coordinator or committee chairs are usually appointed, not elected. Again, according to your bylaws, the appointments are determined by the President or by Board.
