Question: PTO vs. PTCO

Does anyone know the difference between a PTO & a PTCO ? I live in CO and have been communicating with another parent group. They said that a PTCO is tax exempt & does not have to report taxes to the IRS.

Hi Judy,
The PTCO is likely an acronym for a parent group and there probably isn't a connection to its tax exempt status. Parent groups can go by many different names, Parent Teacher Organization, (PTO), Parent Communication Council (PCC), Parent Teacher Council (PTC), etc. The tax exempt status depends on if the group has filed with the IRS to become a non-profit 501c(3) organization. Also, if groups use PTA, they are affiliated with that National PTA.

Hope this helps!
