Question: More participation at the High School level

For various reasons we have lost a lot of participation in the PTO, including those that have volunteered seem to have trouble coming to meetings, etc. Would love to see more High School related articles on who to change this. Anyone out there have any suggestions?

But you can help yourself in the meantime. don't gloss over your own statement that 'for various reasons' you've lost participation at the HS level.

What are those reasons? even if you receive a reply on what may help, you need to identify/understand the audience you are going after for your membership.

PTO should be run like a business. How do you create marketing that is effective at capturing the customers (volunteers) you seek? How do you negate their objections to volunteering? How do you get your message most effectively in front of them?

I'd hazard to guess juggling kids/discipline and activity schedules and meals make for lack of time. Get creative on when to schedule meetings or advertise/make available a complete report of what happened at your meeting. PTO should not be a secret society. Meetings are often viewed as a time waster. (I've actually attended multiple meetings and still didn't know what the heck was going on because all the talk by those in charge was 'we'll do this like we did last time.' Or, 'everybody knows what to do' ...Uh, no, I'm new here. You better explain it to me or I'm not coming back.) Late night after the kids finally get home and in bed may be the only down time busy parents get. Let them look over your meeting there on their own time. And then give them ways to pick and choose what little or lot they can do for you. Invite their skills. Invite their parts and piece they can provide to your whole.

And above all be quick to answer questions and appreciate even the smallest pieces. (Did it feel good to you when your question on this site lingered unanswered?)
