Question: Any idea how many active PTO's exist?

I was curious to know if PTO Today or anyone else has an estimate of how many PTO/PTA type organizations exist in the US? Do most schools have this type of organized volunteer involvement or is this type of activity less common? Both schools I've been involved with have an organization but not sure how extensive the volunteerism is across the states.

Most of the 85,000 - 90,000 elementary and middle schools in the US have a parent group operating on some level. Parent groups are most common in elementary schools, somewhat less common in middle school. In high school, involvement often takes the form of booster clubs, band parents, etc. Many high schools do have PTOs or PTAs, but they aren't as prevalent as in lower grades.
