Otherwise, having been an entrepreneur, I can tell you that creating a PTO Discount card in your local community is actually a PTO fundraising option and might help you kill 2 birds with one stone. In this economy, local businesses--especially new businesses or those under new management--are in constant competition with internet sales, box stores, etc. and they are looking for ways to get new loyal customers. Approach ones that would consider PTO members to be part of their target market. Then you have to approach your end of the deal the same way a good marketing/advertising company would. Provide the business with information on how many members would get the card (equates to how many potential new customers) and something simple about their demographic--mostly women of school-age children, perhaps? or maybe you can quantify their buying preferences or income levels if you think that's an important part of their target market?--(extend your offer to other PTOs throughout the local buying areas--if you read articles here you know that reaching out to OTHER PTOs is a great suggestion for lots of reasons. In this case perhaps you could share the cost of producing the card and manpower to sell it and distribute it) and create a quality 'card' to represent the discount--not something done on a photocopier that anyone could reproduce a fake to get the discount. And give the businesses small signage to indicate they accept the discount card. Sell it to them for a fee the way print advertisement is sold. Monthly fees work well, that way they can discontinue if it's not working for them and you can discontinue if they aren't paying. Then it's also your job to SELL it to your members. Be sure they know who offers the discounts and what discount each business offers. Proofread proofread proofread. Make the announcement at monthly meetings, post prominently at your website, etc. And be sure to follow up with the businesses and members for feedback to improve or tweak the program as time goes on.
