Yes we also do this every Earth Hour day, along with that we also have special program teaching our community to have all junk and unused materials to be donated to the municipality that handle recyclable materials to be converted to waste to energy .

JennJenn-
What a riot! A class guinea pig in a school trashion show... very clever. Bet this kids LOVED it.

We would LOVE to see photos of your event. Any chance you could share them on our Facebook page . I am sure other groups would love to get some ideas from your event.

Kudos to your creative PTO and kids!

The activity that went over the best at our event was the Trash to Treasure Fashion Show. We held a workshop for interested kids during lunch times about 6 weeks before the event. We gave them ideas and guidelines for projects and they had plenty of time to work on their garment. We had some great entries!!! Dresses made from newspaper, a grooming apron (for horse grooming) from old blue jeans, accessories made from a variety of materials. the kids got to model their creations on stage in the gym during the event. they were so proud!!! Oh...my favorite was an outfit made out of an old shirt and accessorized with treats...made for and modeled by the 4th grade class guinea pig!

I lovve the idea of doing a Go Green night on St. Pats day. We are doing ours next month related to earth day. It is our first one and we are really excited. We hooked up with the High School to get kids to come help coordinate and run. The HSers get their community service hours and we get some great volunteers!

Amity Elementary held our first Go Green night last night (St.Patrick's Day). Very well attended and VERY successful. We did Denim Pocket Magnets, Used CD suncatchers, Critter Draft Blocker, TShirt Message Board, Planted tomatoes and lettuce in used milk cartons from school lunches, recycling race, had a this or that (ie paper bag or plastic bag) board, memory match, and a couple others. we had the master gardners there to talk about composting and worm composting. And we gave away cloth bags with flyers, coloring books, worksheets, and a comic book from our recycling service. We also drew names and gave away eco light bulbs and shower heads. It was great!

Rather than ask Safeway to donate bags--they then become waste all over again--start collecting your own. Our school is currently collecting grocery bags and other resin class 2 & 4 plastics in a competition with two other schools to win a bench donated/made by TREX, the company than makes composite plastic decking. Since Sept. we've collected over 13,000 pieces. Just think of what they would've looked like blowing through the woods, floating in the creeks, and not decomposing in the landfill.
We're also involved with TerraCycle.net and their website and FB page have great ideas and photos of what to do with recycled materials. Good luck:-)
