I did pretty much what LoisLane describes as well. My committee sent out several letters to addresses found on FanMail. We've received photos from celebs like Brad Paisley and Kevin Bacon, and we've also received some great items from other individuals like Tim Allen and Mary Lou Retton. If you have the money for stamps & supplies, it's worth trying, as it should give us some good name-recognition and help sell tickets.
I looked up addresses on fanmail.biz and just sent them letters. I sent a stack out. I received a couple of return to senders and some no's -- I got a return from Michael Jordan's foundation and no's from Peyton Manning and Arnold Palmer. We did receive a signed Tim Allen photo and letter from his people yesterday. I have a bunch out still. I applied to the University of Alabama for Nick Saban and they let you know if you're selected. For Coach Saban, you pay shipping for the ball, but considering its value, it's worth it, IMO. All the others, I send sent a SASE along with my donation letter.
I've received so far: John Travolta, Tony Hawk, Jan Brett, University of Alabama Coach Nick Saban, Toby Keith. Saddleback Church Pastor Rick Warren and Scott Fujita (Cleveland Browns.) I sent out a bunch of other letters -- in particularly to the celebrities that are from my state. I'm also getting some memorabilia signed from the university football/basketball team in our city.
