I was wondering the same thing. We have 4 seperate schools. We were want to know if we can transfer the money from each account to the school's account. With an agreement that we would get it back to open our PTO account. Can we do this?
We didn't dare risk losing all our money when we switched over so we pre-paid our big annual school-wide canoe trip for the next school year. But then, of course, we started the school year with no money.
This may come too late but I just joined so...I agree with debbieomi. When we became a PTO we just voted and told the PTA what we did. We did not spend all of our funds. I hope you didn't have to.
Our state PTA never demanded anything from us. As a matter of fact, we had officially disbanded, sent them a letter as to that fact, and did not pay dues for two years. I just got a phone call from the Memberships coordinator or some title like that about a month ago to remind us that our dues were due. Huh? LOL I informed her of our vote, letter, etc and she said well, if there's anything the PTA can ever do for you, please let us know. Uh ya, ok, I'll do that. We had left $500 in our PTA account for about 6 months just in case, but we drew that out and deposited in our PTO account and have long since spent it. We attached a copy of the deposit ticket as a receipt and that was that.
I think that while a good outcome is more likely than a negative result, we just don't hear about the good ones.
When we switched you really have to spend all the money. We paid ahead on buses for the following year, paid the student activities account "money owed" and left the PTA with $5.00. I do believe that the PTA will demand all money in the account when you switch at least they did from us. Just an idea.
We are considering changing from a PTA to a PTO. We usually end the school year with a couple of thousand dollars in the bank to get us started the next year. Has anyone found a way to "donate" the leftover funds from the PTA bank account to the PTO bank account? Spending all our money before changing doesn't seem prudent, as it is the nest egg we like to keep. But I was thinking that PTA is a non-profit org and a PTO is a non-profit org, so maybe we could make a donation from one to the other??
