My biggest complaint isn't so much with the food that the kids are served...it's MUCH better than what we had as kids...but with the snack cart options that are available. My children can purchase canned fruit punch, Little Debbie snack cakes, high-fat chips, and ice cream.
My goal next year is to see things like bottled water, yogurt covered raisins, granola bars, fresh fruit, and pretzels instead. Or at least more healthful foods, anyway. I know that Clark Foodservice has been working with some of our local Catholic schools to provide a better selection of snack options, and I am going to try to get the principal on my side on this one.
What teacher wants kids to load up on sugar and then come back to class?
I remember my sister would eat the hambuger gravy with mashed potatoes the school would serve but not Mom's (same recipe etc)....Funny you mentioned having lunch with your student library mom, I had the pleasure this week and my first day the ham sandwhich I brought was better than the corn dog or hot dog my son had as a choice! Granted the rest of the week was much better but how funny!
To be honest I've never eaten at our school. That will change come Monday, as I have said that we will have a special lunch together. I pack my daughter's lunch every day. Since school is almost over we will be buying our lunch that day. I've seen the food when I have lunch with her and it doesn't look bad at all.
We do have a wonderful lunchroom staff that makes everything from scratch and I've heard that the food is very good and hot. We'll see.

She works for the school! We have a beautiful kitchen the gals love to work in, not huge but nice. Tuesday was homemade stew, now tomorrow is hot dogs but Friday (every Friday) is homemade cheese pizza! Homemade!!! It's not like your Itailan mama would make but pretty good!
This gal is so awesome, she sends home special notice to families with food allergies (ie peanuts) the days she will offer peanut butter sandwiches or cookies (mistake from the vendor and normally don't offer the cookies but the sandwiches are once a month). Well due to a snow day the sandwiches were up a day and she called EACH MOM to ask if their child could eat something else in the main office!! HOW AWESOME IS SHE??!!!

What kind of foods/prices do you have? We're a private school, too, without a kitchen and we, too, bring in outside (read: mostly fattening) food. We have Italian food one day (spaghetti, etc.), Chick Fil A, Mcdonald's, Pizza, and a po-boy type restaurant. Just curious what your prices are. Ours run from about $2.50 at the low end to $4.75 for the most expensive.

WE don't have a fancy kitchen either. However, this year we contracted with a local restaurant for lunches and they bring in hot lunches for the kids. The kids love it. Some parents feel it is a little pricey but I have found that my kids are not as hungry when they get home from school (and therefore not racing for the junk food). WE have 3 lunch periods (we are a k-8 Catholic school)so the restaurant runs brings trays three times a day. So far it has been extremely successful.
