I have tie dyed for over 20 years and just finished doing it with my son's class. I suggest utilizing Grateful Dies out of Denver. They are online and have the best supplies and cheapest prices for actual professional looking results. I did this with 4 year olds, and the shirts look great. The powdered dies are inexpensive and can do a lot, and the die fixer is actually soda ash that can be bought at a lcal pool supply company.
I have done this with a birthday party but have not done anything at this scale. I would imagine the key would be to have things super organized ahead of time. When I did it at a bday party I had the instructions and bags ready to go. Maybe you could have a check in where you have the kids pick up their t-shirts & bags and have them write their name on the tshirt tag and bag with a permanent pen.
As for supplies maybe you could get a nearby craft store donate some of them in exchange for promoting their business to attendees. Hardware stores often carry RIT dye also, so that may be a business to check for donations. That would be a great spot to get the buckets!
Also thinking that it's best to limit color choices to keep things simple-- school colors?
Keep us posted. We'd LOVE to see pictures of your event. If you have a chance, post some on

Has anyone done an all school tie-dye event? Our elementary (k-6) school of about 450 students is planning to tie-dye t-shirts in late September. Wondering how you did it, where you got the supplies, any tips you can offer. I'd appreciate any response you can give.
Thanks!!
