Ok this is a shot in the dark, so I'm hoping there is someone out there that has been successful with this!
When I was in grade school, we had a book-a-thon. It was NOT a fundraiser of any sort! It was a way to promote reading and literacy. One day a year, the entire school (during the school day) would bring blankets, pillows and books to school. The PTA would provide snacks and drinks for everyone. The whole school would spend the day reading together! Older kids would read books of their interest, younger kids would have guests come in and read favorites to the classroom as a whole. PE, music and the such were still conducted those days, in addition to (obviously!) recess and lunch. I know that for me, this was absolutely a highlight for the year! Some of our teachers went so far as to have us read a short book as a class in the weeks leading up to the event, and then watch the movie version that day and we would discuss differences/similarities and what we liked and didn't like. I was a wonderful experience and I would love to approach this possibility in our school.
Has anyone successfully done anything like this? I was in grade school quite some time ago (the horror of dating myself is too uncomfortable to say exactly when!) and I have been unsuccessful in making any contacts at that school to see if and how they still run the event.
Looking forward to suggestions and help!
