So sorry to hear about the closing. We had a neighborhood school close several years ago. Our school got 150 of the students from the closed school which caused many problems for our small school. Our principal was also tranferred during that difficult time making the transition even more difficult.
My son will be graduating this June and we just found out this his school will only be open for one more year and then the children will be sent to the nearby middle school that is closing for good. I'm so glad we don't have to go through that closure. My son's school is like family and knowing that it will be closing soon forever is very emotional.
So sorry to hear your elementary school is closing. Our school is not closing, but our students are being moved to a new building and it is still a big transition.
We have done two things: First, we are planning a school wide barbecue to celebrate the end of an era, and; Second, we have designed t-shirts that say last class of ______ with all the students names by grade on the back.
We went through a school closing several years ago when we built a new school. Very different circumstances but it still involved goodbyes and transition. We did (very large) group photograph of the kids & staff in front of the schools & each family got a photo. We also did a goodbye/ice cream social party at the school's playground -- simple but gave an opportunity for goodbyes and closure.
I would love some ideas and suggestions. We just found out that our elementary school will be closed in June. The PTA will have a role in the transitional process. The children will be split between 3 other elementary schools.
Have any of you gone through a school closing?
Do you have any ideas on how we can help transition the students?
Do you have any suggestions on how we can host a celebration to honor the school in June?
