I've never heard of the movie license issue before...our PTO just this summer applied for our own EIN # but does that have anything to do with us needing or not needed a license?
As far as ideas...we are doing an 'Election' theme for movie night this year - we've done Christmas movies the past two years but are having the kids vote between two movies then show the winner the 1st Friday in November. We're hoping to really pump it up during October - decorations in the halls...handouts for the kids...hopefully some of the older classrooms can use it to talk about the presidental election and show how an election will work at our school level.
Hi MB-in my case families were encouraged to bring a blanket; or a low "beach chair" for the adults if needed, and pillows etc. Since ours is usually a kick off of our holiday celebrations we do encourage PJs and santa hats and have tried to show the holiday type movies (like Polar express). We do a "dinner and a movie" and have premade and prepaid bags that include one hot dog, one chips bag and one juice box. Yes - you do need a movie license since you are an organization showing a movie that is not just for personal use. Fox's county license covers her movies in that case but because we are a separate entity (501c3) we need our own license for the showing so you may want to check with your school system (start witht he principal of course). Also there are often restrictions on what ratings can be shown. Ours is strictly G only so that limits our selectionis somewhat. You can google for the license or there may be a link here to movie license organizations--I think the email is movielic.com. It is very reasonable and better safe than sorry.
Also--if you are contemplating outdoor movies, some companies (like Disney) have restrictions on their movies being shown outdoors so it is always best to ask the questions before you sink your money into the movie, equipment, licensing and the outdoor screens etc.
Our pto is very new. We are thinking of doing a movie night too! So my question is this... what do you have for the kids to sit on? (floor, chairs?)
Also, do you just charge for concession or for entrance too? We are "not" looking to make this a fundraiser but a fun night for the kids.
The raffle idea is really great! I will have to mention that to our board!
Oh, one more thing... what do you mean by getting a license for playing a movie??? Can't we just show a movie?

Any thoughts?
My school has not had an outdoor movie however the town I live in, their parks and rec department do this once a year. They have large outdoor speakers they use and the sound is fine. I've participated every year for the last four years and have never had a problem with hearing or seeing the movie regardless of where I sat.
Has anyone ever done an outdoor family movie night? I really want to do one, but I don't know how the screen/projection/sound part of it would work outdoors.
Our movie night is pretty simple, but it's not for profit - more for promoting fun family time. We use the schools projector, play the licensed movie. Before/During/After concession stand with chips, pop corn, candy, pop, water. We sell raffle tickets for $1 each and give away the movie we watched. The fliers and decor are all geared around the movie.
Question: Has anyone ever done refillable buckets? Our local theater now does large buckets that can be refilled anytime for free within a 6 month period. Wondering if you could sell smaller "sand bucket" size custom buckets. I found this link that even had glow in the dark ones.

They don't just have glow in the dark, they also have normal ones. So then they kids could buy these buckets for $8 and they could have unlimited refills all movie year. Any thoughts?
