I'd love to try this! I'm going to have to brainstorm on this and the ideas posted here.

We are doing a very, very condensed version at our open house. We thought it would be fun for the children to see the principal play. The really fun part is she won't know ahead of time she's playing the game. At the end of her welcome back speech, we'll surprise her by asking her if she think's she's smarter than a 5th grader.

Here's what we're doing:

There will be no money amounts involved.

She will answer one or two questions per grade leve (depending on time).

Since the school doesn't condone cheating, she can discuss each question with two 5th graders (cooperative learning).

While she's working on the questions, we'll go around the room and ask the children what they think the answers are.

Since the school also doesn't condone dropping out of school, she'll have to answer each question and then depending on how many she gets correctly, she will either pass the 5th grade or have to repeat it.

We plan on surprising other faculty/teachers with the game throughout the year at different events. I think the children would like to see if the adults can answer the "tough" questions.

We just did this at a Family Night during our book fair and it was a hit!!!
The format was pretty much like the gameshow. I used questions from the show and from MEAP tests which can be found on-line and Terra Nova tests which I got from the assistant principal. We limited it to two cataogries per grade which made getting our bank of question easier. Then I printed out signs from my computer and laminated them and attached velcro to the back so they would stick to a display board that we made from another event earlier in the year. I did signs for the questions, prize dollars won and cheats used. We went the same cheats they have on the show. Our prize dollars went from $1 to $100, but it was all book fair money. We also had five 5th graders to act as the classmates and I was the host. Our president was "Vanna" she took down the signs as they moved through the game. Everyone said they LOVED IT, and wanted us to do it again next year. We are planning on doing it for our fall book sale and charging admission of a canned food donation for our fall food drive. I think I am also going to see if I can get sponsors so we can offer more prize money. It was alot of fun and would recommend it highly! Good luck Sherry

Here's what I posted on these boards back in December, hope it helps:

Here's the latest one I recently brought up at our meeting...

"Are You Smarter Than a 4th Grader"

This is, of course, based off of the new hit show, Are you smarter than a 5th grader. Since our school only goes up to 4th grade I figured capping it there would work.

The idea is to make this for 4th grade parents and use 4th grade students for the classmates.

Just like in the show, if you haven't seen it, there are numerous grade related categories and questions. For example, First Grade Science, Third Grade Geography, etc. You can get the categories and the questions from talking with the teachers (also a great way to learn about the grade curriculum).

The show can go up to a million dollars. Obviously we aren;t going to do that, but maybe a $100 gift card would be viable for the highest prize (no one makes it to that level in the show)...

In addition, there are lifelines. For example, per the tv show, there's the auto-save where if you get the question wrong but your classmate got it correct, you get credit. Another is "Copy", where you can decide to use a classmates answer without knowing what it is. Lastly there's "Cheat", which lets you look at your classmates answer before you decide yours. Of course, as we don't condone cheating, we would make light of this during the game...

Figured this would be a great night for our graduating class. Flyers can go home and everyone can come out to watch, but only the 4th graders and their parents who wish to play can be part of the show.

In addition this would be a great opportunity to have a bake sale, sell pizza, etc.

I'm even going to go so far as to talk with the music teacher to get the kids to record the "Are you smarter than a 4th grader" music, again just like the show.

Check out the website to get a good idea.

Good luck,
PresidentJim

Actually, I use to LOVE Art Linkletter. I think you should do a spin on that with "Are you smarter than a Kindergartener".....

Put questions in the jar with answers that K kids come up with! That will stump ALL the grown-ups! And have it Video Tape for an entry to America's Funniest Videos....

Actually, I think I will bring this up at My Own PTO group!
