Super Mom

Actually, our principal was a little resistant at first too. We sat down and had a meeting to discuss the specifics. Her biggest concerns were safety. We agreed to have chaperones everywhere. That each door had to be guarded non stop. That the hallway outside the dance was monitored. And that the parents had to physically check there kids in and out and show ID and that NO student would be allowed to walk home. The invitation to the dance was a VERY wordy flyer but we wanted to be as specific as possible. We even added pictures to show appropriate dress and inappropriate dress. Oh, and we also stated that this was NOT a couples dance (our school goes up to 7th grade) All of these things made the principal a little more at ease and the dance was a success. We're planning on holding one monthly for the students!

If our school wanted to have one, our principal would have to agree to it first. Then I would buy graduation decorations from Oriental Trading. They have nice, inexpensive items. Then I would send letters home asking parents to chaperone the dance. I would only hold the dance for 2 hours. I'd ask parents and local businesses to donate food for the kids. I would also ask around to see if anyone knew a good DJ. If not, then the kids would listen to mixed CD's. Our 5th graders are begging to have a dance, but our principal is totally against the idea. I feel really bad for the kids because I am the PTO President, and I have some really great ideas. Good luck to you.

Has anyone ever hosted a 6th grade graduation dance?
How did you organize it and what was the response by students
and parents? Did you have to get permission from the district?
