Yes Hamburger Helper is doing a grant for communities in need. I happened to come across this one the other day too.

If you do a search on "donation", you will find previous letters listed on this site, then just modify to your own.:)

We also seek our dontions mainly in person and I agree the best way to get them is when you are actually purchasing at the store or dining at that restaurant so start early. Some will need to be faxed to corporate offices and that works well too. We also make sure we don't have more than one person asking a business so they aren't hit up over and over. We use a letter on shcool letterhead and we give that to the business for tax purposes and so they have our information like phone numbers etc.
Our letter simply describes the event and asks for the help of the community. It lets them know it is tax deductible and if you are raising for a certain goal let them know that as well. Also include a thank you and what you can give them in return like listing their name in the school newsletter or on a letter that is sent home to all parents etc. Some schools mail the letter one week and then call the business the next to let them know they can come pick up a donation. It all takes a lot of effort and time but it does pay off!
