Well, we do it a few different ways.
1. If our PTO has paid for the food, and it is unopened ( like boxes of crackers, chips, etc) and still in code, we save it for another event. If there is no event, we give it to our administration who can give it to individual classrooms for snacks, or sometimes they send it home with families who are in need.
2. If parents have paid for it, we automatically give it to the administration who distributes it where needed. (We don't know which teachers get plenty of classroom donations, and which have few donors in any particular year)
3. If it is open but untouched product, we put it in our teacher's room and it will get devoured the next day.
4. If it has been touched, such as dips, it gets thrown out!
5. If it is unopened, but needs refrigeration, THEN it is fair game for the clean-up volunteers, as we don't have refrigeration space in our teacher's lounge. ( otherwise we would leave it for them!
What do most do with the unopened leftovers from events i.e. chips, popcorn etc? One would think they should be saved for another upcoming event (all parents are asked to donate snacks) but it seems as if the tradition has been to give it away to the clean-up crew. Checked by-laws (outdated) and did not find anything addressing this issue and looked for a code of ethics - none exist.
