We also hold board meetings each month.

Last year we also held a Family Portrait fundraiser right before Veteran's Day.

We so a lot as well. When I took over as president in the 2005-2006 school year, I added about 9 new events. It's been fun and busy! We do have a good core group of volunteers about 6 or so that help out just about all of the time. My husband is glad this is my last year as president! <wink> I'll just be one of the vice-presidents and be able to chair a couple things.

Good luck to you all,
Holly

Check out the new post Starting a PTSO under the Robt's Rules, Bylaws, Legal Topic. I started a new thread for you, essence, because you're likely to get more responses from a new thread than piggy-backing off one that has nothing to do with your topic.

These boards is a terrific start. Do a search with the words that are key--like "Start a PTO" and also consider the nug work of selection or initial appointment of officers (if you can hold an election then get an election committee together and elect your officers. If you are going to a new school, we appointed ours for the first year.
The exciting news is you are now tabula rosa and can make this organizatioin come together in whatever exciting ways you want to. The challenge is to establish enough formality to allow consistancy and enough informality to allow creativity and inclusion. Communication is a big plus toward generating support.

We start with a large fall fund raiser (budget for 10,000 in earnings). Have a toy drive at Christmas. A silent auction at our Sock Hop in January (budget for 1000 in earnings). A Family Fun Night in March (budget for 2500 in earnings). If you have too many you will burn yourself out. My first year as Pres I did that, I felt it year end but LOVED every minute of it. Good Luck!
