I'm gonna add my two cents worth here and also say I think it's a bad idea. Too many religions, deniominations, belief levels, no matter how innocuous the prayer may be. I think that too many would just go along so to not make waves or they may not feel comfortable in speaking up.
I agree with mykidsmom, pray on your way to the meeting, in the parking lot or as you are walking down the hall to it. If God is going to answer it, doesn't matter if it's one or a dozen doing the praying, he'll answer it.
We have a new Christian, Southern Baptist, Roman Catholic and a Treasurer, our charter is held by the Dept. of Education/State org (nope not with the district) and use public funds. In a private school useing private funds...yeah. I think that is how my childhood friends began meeting in their Catholic School. Public school, using public funds, in a situation like that...no.
In your vehichle on the way or in the parking lot...I had said the rosery to ask for strength, my secret to lasting almost 10 years!
At the end of the day....this is really somethign you need to decide with your group. I would feel uncofortable with it as my faith is a personnal "thing", you may be...blessed... with more open-minded members.

I don't know too many PTOs who aren't in some way shape or form dependent on the school. I would ask the Principal his/her opinion. I would assume the Principal would say NO WAY.
Our school is lucky (along with most public schools), we have people from all different backgrounds and beliefs. The great thing about public school is those beliefs aren't brought into question at any time. We have that seperation of Church and State.

Why not put it out to a vote of your membership (or at the very minimum your PTOA board members) and see what the majority feels? Isnt that how all PTOA matters are handled?
Most people do have strong emotions about religion in general, so I expect you would have a strong turnout in voters, therefore quorum will be achieved and you will then be doing something that your folks have voted on, and no one can say you 'imposed' it (or your views) on them (even IF they can still go out in the hallway and not participate in the prayer).
I was thinking of having a prayer at the opening of our officers meeting. Simply saying to the other officers that I would like to have a pray at the beginning of the meeting out in the hall, if anyone would care to join me. I also know that many, if not all, of the officers are christians and even if they are not I really don't think they would be offended. After all, they don't have to join me if they choose not to.
