Thanks for the great ideas. Would love to hear about some of the different themes used at your school. The Royal Luncheon sounds really neat.
Thanks again!!
At our school, Grandparents' Day has a theme. This year they were invited to a Royal Luncheon. The front lobby and cafeteria were transformed into a castle (fantastic art teacher) with tablecloths and all. There was even a throne on the stage complete with a royal red robe and scepters (supplied by PTA) and each grandparent was presented with a crown. Our school has a digital camera and a picture of each child with their grandparent was taken on the throne and sent home the next day. The kids also created pictures of Queen Grandma and King Grandpa for their grandparents. After lunch, grandparents went back to the classroom and read stories to the kids (Pre-K through 5th).
We serve a nice breakfast for them and then they go into the classrooms and read a story and then talk with the kids about their life. It isn't a whole lot but the grandparents really seem to enjoy it. Some will stay for lunch. It is a great way to recruit some also, for room parents and things like that.
At my closed school, the students would perform skits on the stage, we would serve cookies, coffee and juice(provided by pto), then they would go to the classroom for an activity. The Grandparents really seemed to enjoy it.
At my 'new' school, they have lunch(pto pays for grandparents lunch and its a sack lunch from the lunchroom) with their grandchild. Thats it and some have commented that they would like something different. I'm trying to change the principal's mind about the lucheon. We'll see...
Would appreciate any ideas on what your PTO does for Grandparent's Day? I would like to do more for our grandparent's then just a breakfast & have our students more involved. Would appreciate any suggestions. Ours is held in October.
