Wanted to bump up this thread. It's an oldie! But it's February already and wondering if anyone wanted to share plans for African-American History Month?
We dont but the school cover Spanish Heritage Mo (Sept?), Black History Mo and they do a Heritage Project during the Holiday season.
Our PTA doesnt.

We don't do anything for this either. But I thought of this post last night while I was looking at my son's scholastic book orders.
There is a section of books highlighting black history. One of the books really caught my eye because it was about a slave who explored Mammoth Cave. In fact it was his family and another African American family that made Mammoth Cave what is today (in my opinion). They often get over looked. The book is only $2.99 (I thought that was a good price). There were other books too. Not sure what your budget is but you could give books like that to classrooms or even have a drawing for books. I am sure you can get more info on www.scholastic.com. It would be nice if you could get an African American author to come and speak. Or someone that may have been involved in the Civil Rights movement. You may also want to check out Dover Publishing. You can get books cheap there and they often spot light such events. I get a weekly newsletter from there and they have sample pages from books that you can print out.
We never do anything for this. The school does but not the PTO. We did have an assembly last year that would be suitable though and I am sure there are pleanty of others like it out there. We had this group come in who did an assembly with life size puppets on Harriet Tubman and the underground railroad. It was really cute and the kids learned alot.
Happy Near Year!
Wondered if anyone is planning any activities for Black History Month? I haven't started anything but wanted to get going on some ideas right away.
Thanks.
