Our schools celebrate March as reading month. Along with our Title 1 teachers, we want to offer afterschool activities and events for our children and their families. We have been discussing having a book exchange, where every student would be able to pick a new book, regardless of whether they brought a book to exchange. Along with this would be a pizza bake-off. We would invite our five local pizzerias to participate. The premise would be that each person, or family, would purchase tickets for the pizza. There would then be voting for the best area pizza, with the winning pizza being publicized in our newsletter and article we submit to the local paper.
Two local authors have already been booked for during the school day. Local "celebrities" will also be invited in to read for students.
I am looking for ideas to expand on the evening events. We're thinking maybe one each week.
Thank you ladies and gentlemen for your input.
