Community Outreach Night

20 years 1 month ago #118412 by mykidsmom
I was thinking of more like a night the families can come and met specials teachers, yearbook sponsor, choir, PTO, Girl/Boy Scouts, maybe even invite a couple service groups.

I'll talk to the Principal, she's feeling a little low about this and I hope I can give her some ideas how this can be "tweeked"....just a little ;)

Good morning
I stumbled across this site via Crayola's newsletter. I just wanted to share a couple of the things that I coordinated and/or implemented as a 21C Family Resource Center coordinator.

Family Dance Party--this was my very first family night in the new position and it was extremely successful. Flyers were sent home; the principal had tapes of trendy and fun dances that the kids (and families) could do--the Chicken, the Hokey Pokey, the Electric Slide--that sort of thing. The principal was the "DJ" for the evening and she led the crowd in doing the dancing. Juice and cookies were provided along with some raffle prizes (mostly books) and all had a good time!

I also did an ethnic cookbook filled with recipes from our families. With > 500 kids in the school and a multitude of cultures represented, the potential was huge. I designed flyers that included a lined area for writing recipes as well as my work email. They went home to the students twice over the course of a month and I received a wonderful response--a slew of yummy recipes from many cultures.
I used Publisher to create a cookbook, complete with clip art, item substitution charts, measurement charts, etc. and had it printed by the PTA. We sold it for 3.00 to parents as a benefit for the PTA. We sold well over 100 copies of it, with the school absorbing the printing costs. (While I did the initial cookbook in color, the school printed it in b/w. It was done on standard paper and I did all the editing, etc., so costs were minimized.

Not sure if either idea helps you but they were very successful for me, so I thought I'd share them

Well, sadly, I have taken calls all week from parents that went to a week long Outreach night at the school. Each night was dedicated to one or two grade levels and the parents were not only dissapointed but wished they could have that hour back! No kidding!
The PTO asked if we could be of help, "No we'll be fine".....all that was done was a powerpoint presentation about the curicculum and upcoming big field trips for the 4-5th grades. That's IT!

Help me out here, is it this suppose to be an oppertunity for parents to also sign-up and talk to school clubs, Scouts, cheerleading, daycare etc and and informational meeting with their teacher?

It's a great idea and needs work but I need help, the one thing I have learned is it our school instead of looking at how to better the mistakes, just never do it again! no....this just needs some more ideas!

WHat do you all do??? :D
