Last night we just decided to do a reading night just before the Holiday break. We thought books covering the different kinds of Holidays would be fun. We don't know how to do it though. Still figuring that out. Oh, I almost forgot. We will promote that this might give a parent time to shop (while another parent or grandparent brings the kids to read).
One year our family fun night had a book theme. Each game was centered around a book.
Harry Potter - played broom hockey
Alice in Wonderland - played croquet
Babysitters Club - had to diaper a babydoll
The Mitten - had to stuff animal beanie babies into a large mitten (oven mitts)
There were more but that was like 3 or 4 years ago. Sorry....
Hey! We just discussed this last night at our board meeting! We'll be doing ours as a Pajama Night and we'll be serving a pancake dinner before the reading activities. We've invited prominent community members to come and read some stories aloud to the younger children but...what do we do for the older kids? We'll be attempting 2 things: 1) Im going to call the debate coach and drama teacher at the high school to see if they have any students who would come down and almost "perform" a story; 2) We'll be doing scary stories for grades 4-6... in the library with only flashlights. I hope these ideas work for us and maybe they'll give you some ideas as well!

Ours will be September 30. If I am not mistaken our book fair will still be running. Our "Fall into Reading" is sponsored by the board of ed (that is what our paper said!), Title 1, and FRC. The older kids get to watch their parents take an AR test. They love this. Pizza is also served. The staff dresses up as favorite characters. The main focus of this is to have our Sing, Spell, Read, Write program and other programs explained to parents.
We are having our first family fun night this October for grades K thru 6. We'd like to have a "Fall Into Reading" theme. We have lots of ideas for the little ones, but nothing to grab and create interest for the older students and their families. What has worked for you and your group? Thanks! Oh, and this is a totally free event. I cannot charge any fees. We also provide dinner to the students and the families.
