Tips for a Chili Cook-off?

As far as I know, Target focuses mostly on literacy. You could easily make this work! I would go to your local store & find out what they do. Do they have partners in education, etc. We don't have a target so I focus on Wal-Mart
Good Luck

momasham - Does Target do a funds match like Walmart? We're just getting a Target (don't have a Walmart) and I'm wondering if they help the schools/community the same way.
Thanks for the info..

Salsa cook off is a madera idea if I ever heard one!! I LOVE IT!!
Unfortunately I no longer live in CA where people try different types of foods. Instead I live in GA where Taco bell is the same as mexican ;)

If I were doing it, I would begin by sending out flyers to students & local restraunts asking them to pre-RSVP also, ask what they feel is a reasonable fee for free publicity. This will give an idea of how many chefs and what type of fee to charge.

Publicize everywhere! Call local radio stations including AM just to see if they can help. You might even get 1 to come to the event!

I would see if I could get board members, executive staff, teachers to judge. If you can maybe 5 of the above & 2 student judges.

Wal-mart will match up to $1000 of your earnings if you invite them out to volunteer(if i understood our rep correctly). In fact you had the cook off in the wal-mart parking lot & had many signs, they will definately match funds as stated above & you could probaly have use of a large tent. You need to find out the community coordinators name & get something to her/him in writting 30days before the event.

I hope this has helped.

Good Luck!

Last year we did a salsa contest. We had 3 categories: mild, spicy and exotic. You bought a plate of chips and your choice of 10 salsas for $1.00. When you were done you voted. We tallied the votes and gave trophies to the winners in each category. It was a hit but we are having problems getting approval to do it again because of the new food codes.

Sounds like fun to me. Good luck!!

Our town has an annual Chili Cook-off. It is so much fun.

They (Chamber of Commerce) sell "Chili tasting kits" for $2, consisting of a styrofoam bowl, spoon, napkins, crackers, mint and a ballot. Teams make a big pot(s) of chili and everyone can try a small bowl of the booths they choose. Tasters then vote on best chili, hottest chili, and best booth. They also have a set of "professional" judges.

Every year is a different theme, so it is fun to see the booth decorations.

In October we will be hosting our annual Harvest Festival and we are considering adding a chili cook-off to the event (we have lots of games and activities for the children, this might be a fun addition for the parents). For those of you who have held this type of activity before, can you give me some pointers on how to think about doing it, promoting it, and so forth? Judging?? We're at ground zero on this element. Thinking of approaching a local vendor to try and obtain a bbq as a prize. Thanks!!! Elementary school of 700 students, grades K-5.
