Have you tried talking with the local church groups...most of them would be willing to help.

I would start by calling or going in to local Costco or Office Depot and ask if the store in your area is participating in the backpack program. Actually, I would probably go in and do it in person. Then, find out what the qualifications are and see if you can get put on the list. If they only furnish 100 or so, get them for your incoming kindergartners.

VERY INTERESTED in info. on the backpack program! I'm vp of boosters at a title 1 k-6 school, and also new to this. If anyone could help by letting me know HOW we could get info. and apply for this program, I'd really appreciate it! Please email me if you have info. you are willing to share. Thanks!

Office Depot and Costco also do free backpack programs - mostly for schools with high percentage of disadvantaged kids. (We've received them two years in a row)

I am new to the website and the post of PTO president of a school with approx. 245 kids and 6 PTO members. I was very interested in the "free" backpacks for the kids for back to school. How do you go about that sort of task? If not backpacks, even homework binders, etc. Some words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated.

We recieved a donation of coats from Lands End, they sell back packs too! Sports Authority is a large sporting goods store that may donate, Wal-Mart often does big donation projects like that. I would start NOW though!
Do a Google search for backpack companies and go from there. You may end up with more backpacks than you know what to do with!!! ;)
