I'm so sorry to hear about your school. It is always sad to hear that something (especially a school) that has been open for decades has to close. Since it has been around for a long time, I suggest a community picnic. Many local companies/newspapers/restaraunts might even donate/sponser the event considering how long it has been open and the age ranges they could target with their involvement, after all, they really can use the publicity. Also, try speaking with your Board of Ed to see if they will co-sponsor it.
The advantages of doing the picnic is you can always go "over board" if you have the excess funds. Otherwise, its just great to have everyone in the community reminise (?spelling) about when they went there.
How much money do you have? When is the event? Will you invite the whole community? A picnic has the advantage that you can entertain a large group with varied interests. There are dude ranches that will come to you, set up food, games and music. Some caterers can do this too.
If you don't have the money, grocery stores can do food trays - sandwiches, fruit, ect. Usually some one enjoys running games and relay races.
Without knowing what state you are in, it would be hard to recommend a carnival company or petting zoo. There are places that will do it for you. They will probably charge a premium for travel time. I would look it up in Yahoo! yellow pages or search for carnival+ (Your state) at google.com
I need help NOW. It was announced about three or four weeks ago that our school is closing. I need help on ideas for a big party, carnival, BBQ, or something. We were told for two years since our school is the biggest we would not close. Anyways, we plan on every class taking some sort of field trip but I would to bring in the parents to. Most of the parents and some grandparents went to school here. We are a school of k-5 of about 500 students. Our PTO has always been small the people we do have for volunteers just don't want to put in the energy now that we are closing. Emotions running HIGH. So, what is out there? Where could I get a traveling carnival that travels(our school is about hour and half to two hours from a major city. And it's in the mountains. 6500ft. Or a traveling zoo. Any ideas greatly appreciated.
