Good evening,

We read about the Donuts with Dads and Muffins with mom....we are planning for next year but a suggestion was made by a parent that we call it "pastries with parents". Has anyone used this?
We would love some info.

Our Spring Night on March 25 - "Reading Under the Stars" was a first for us. We had 613 parents pre-register for the evening...we served hot dogs, chips and a drink (capri sun/children - canned pop for the adults)at no cost to the families. A total of 450 parents and children attended. Our door prizes consisted of books, family games and lots of small items for everyone in the family (this is how we know who attended through door prize registrations) We were fortunate to have the local astronomy club bring telescopes to view the five planets visible at this time (free).

Any ideas for the following would be greatly appreciated..Science night (beyond the usual science experiments)

Second time around at the school..my grandson is now at the school...actually I never left. Starting my 26th year.

How about an egg roll or an egg spoon race? You could start the race as a set time and do a presell of tickets for that.

At our Spring Fling last year we did a "Dino-Dig". We didn't use sand because we could get rice cheaper. We put prizes in plastic eggs and hid the eggs in "sand tables" we borrowed from the K rooms. I think we had a sand timer for a game but you could only let them dig for 30 sec or so.

JHB--I teach at a public school, and no it is not centered around the religious aspect of Easter. Actually I believe they are calling it The Spring Fling. Since Easter is in the month of April we are using Easter decorations and activities, involving eggs, easter bunny pictures, etc. Our book fair was at our Fall Family night. Our school had PTO years ago, and it got dropped. This has been our first year back, and I have to say it could be better organized, but hopefully we will have learned some different ideas and things before school starts back in August.

Tiger - I'm just curious... are you with a private/church related school? We'd never be able to hold an event with an Easter theme.

And is it the religious symbolism of Easter or the commercial aspect (bunnies, eggs, baskets, candy)?

Our Spring Event is a combination sock hop, book fair, bingo, silent auction with a few other activities held on a Friday night.

For a craft: Easter egg shakers are fun to make. Just fill an egg with rice or unpopped popcorn. Decorate with stickers over the seam and shake for music. These go for $2-3 each in the music stores. It's one of those things that parents probably won't get but the kids love.
Contest: Classic egg drop contest.
Carnival Games:
Catch the rabbit. Put a small stuffed bunny or two on a string. Pull across the table while the kids try to catch it with a butterfly net.
Pick an Easter egg - out of a basket of eggs, the kids pick one egg. There's a prize inside or a ticket for a larger prize. Recycle the eggs to lower the cost. (This is kind of the same level as the fishing game and duck pond which would also be cool.)

I can tell you a little about our Family Fun Night and what I'm looking for. I don't think I explained it enough earlier. (In a rush) Our school is K-5, me being second grade one of 8 teachers. The night is being held on April 6, from 5-7, with every grade level participating. It will be outside on the playground, and the children will be served hot dogs, chips, and soda. Kngt is doing a cupcake walk, first grade is Ring Around the Soda, there will be pictures with the Easter Bunny, spoon race with egg, and water balloon toss. For some of these activities there will be tickets for 25 cents each. We had first chosen the bean bag toss, which we had already done at our Fall Family Night, so I was trying to find something different. The children are expected to rotate around to all activities, depending on tickets. So time is another thing to keep in mind. I hope this helps, ideas so far have been great! Thank You!
