My advice for what to do if someone wants an office but the others don't think he/she is fit for the office...consider making one office a "co-" position. If you have co-secretary or whatever, you can divide up duties so that the one who isn't quite right for the position has some duties, but doesn't have full control of the office. You could tell her that you are so happy that you have several people interested in being officers, and you have decided to create this position this year so that both can serve. Now, both people that truly have a desire to serve can, and your PTO can still provide their services.
What works is what is in the best interest of children and your parent organization. Commitment, Respect, Collaborative Leadership will strengthen any parent organization. There is a role for everyone. Some people are simply not Ready for "prime time". Committee Chairs are often temporary positions. But it's a great place to start. When a parent steps up and handles smaller responsibilities first then his/her comittment level will grow, respect for authority and others in leadership roles and then he/she will evolve into a better, stronger, and more focused leader. We all need to be reminded why we do what we do and that is because it is in the best interest of our children. Good Luck! Lyndon Brown, PTA President Newark, NJ
We are doing great this year recruiting but I have a delicate question. We have a Mom that wants to run for office. She is not apologetic about her gossiping, drama, and trying to promote her business through the PTA. She will flake out, and she is in general super coo~koo.
Now what do we do? She does help on occasion and if we run someone else in her place that will end. We have so little help it will hurt but not for long. And we don't want to create bad feelings.
